I asked my daughters, Lola and Charlie, why they never invite anyone over. They said, “Because you will make it awkward.”
A week later we invited one of Lola's friends over with her parents. They were very polished people. The kind of family that probably has matching luggage.
My wife, Lizzie, likes my antics, and Charlie is entertained when Lola is uncomfortable, which meant Lola was on her own.
When they arrived the dad mentioned his work. I said, “Private equity, huh? So when you fire 300 people, do you ever have to look them in the eyes, or is it just automated?” Lola said, “Dad.” He laughed nervously. I said, “Do you all celebrate with champagne afterward, or is that considered gauche?” Lola kicked me under the table.
Then his wife mentioned she is a full time stay at home mom. I said, “Do you have help, or are you actually doing all of it?” She said they had a nanny during the week. I said, “Ok, so this is more of a management level position, a more hands off approach if you will” Charlie laughed.
I asked if the nanny was live in. Lola looked uncomfortable. “What? I’m trying to understand the household.”
Then I asked if they had a prenup. There was a pause. I looked at the wife and said, “You come from money, right?” Lola said, “Stop.” I said, “I'm trying to figure out who makes out better if things go south?” Lola said, “Dad.” “What? He works in finance. This is finally a question in his field of expertise.”
After they left, I said, “I thought it went great.” Lola said, “We need to practice having guests over.”
