I met this guy at the flea market and we talked for about an hour.
I don’t remember everything he said, but I remember this part.

"People like me who can grow their own food, have their own land, know their grandparents’ stories, have cousins down the road, fix things, borrow tools, watch each other’s kids, sit around talking. People like me are hard to control.

So instead of fighting people like me, they just make that kind of life hard to have.

They make family expensive. Make having kids feel irresponsible. Men feel useless. Women feel like they don’t need anyone. Make sex easy. Keep everybody tired, distracted, and just comfortable enough. 

Then everything people need to live comes from somewhere else. Food from a store. Water from a bill. Shelter from a bank. Medicine from a pharmacy, Money from a job. "Safety" provided by your government. Their power comes from controlling what people depend on. The more distance between man and survival, the more obedient he gets.

So people end up spending all their time working just to stay inside the system. They don’t have time for family, or teaching their kids themselves, or learning real skills, or building anything of their own.

After a while people don’t really belong to each other anymore.

So they start belonging to ideas instead. They’ll fight strangers over those ideas, but they won’t fight the things that actually run their lives.

Eventually nobody remembers how to live without the system. And once that happens, it doesn’t really have to control them anymore, because they’ll defend it themselves.

That’s the strongest kind of control when people can’t imagine living any other way."
