I commissioned an artist to paint my portrait. This isn’t the commission. He painted two and sprung this one on me when I went to collect the first. He said I didn’t have to buy it. Then he stood beside it. I bought it.
I could have said no, but I didn’t want to make things awkward. So now I own two paintings of myself. My mom said I had to learn to disappoint people. Easy for her. She’d been disappointing me for years.
The artist delivered both paintings. There was room for one. I asked him to put the second in the basement. He looked disappointed. So we removed a large mirror in the living room.
Now I needed somebody to patch the wall. The man who came to patch it said the whole room should be painted. He had an opening Thursday. I said Thursday was fine.
My mom came over and asked why the furniture was under plastic. I told her the room needed to be painted. She asked when I’d decided that. I said it wasn’t really a decision.
