The woman in this painting ran a weapons company. She asked me to include a suit of armor to demonstrate strength and flowers because she wanted people to see the softer side of her.

I thought that was fair. A missile travels in one direction. A woman contains multitudes.

She’d inherited the business from her father, who’d never once been asked to explain why killing people mattered to him personally. But every interviewer wanted her to discuss compassion. So she started a foundation to rebuild schools the company’s customers had destroyed.

At the portrait unveiling, a reporter asked whether she felt responsible for civilian deaths. She said she thought about them every day. This was true. There was a company meeting every morning to review civilian casualties and how best to address them publicly.

A reporter asked what she thought about. “The children,” she said.
He asked whether there was a particular child. I thought this was excessive. She ran a multi-billion dollar company. How could she be expected to remember the dead children by name?

To my surprise, she named a boy. Omar. She’d met his mother at the ribbon cutting for a school the foundation had rebuilt. Omar had survived the first strike. The second killed him. Both weapons were theirs. His mother said he’d wanted to be an engineer.

Later, she showed me a photo of Omar and asked whether I could paint him next.

I quoted the same price as her portrait. I said I would make it smaller, though, since it was just a child.
