My daughter Lola decided I needed training before we ever had people over again. Apparently I ask inappropriate questions. My other daughter, Charlie, thought this was a fantastic idea.

Lola set the table, made name cards for fake guests, and Charlie volunteered to play all of them. Lola looked at me and said, “Dad, your only job is to act normal.” Charlie walked into the room. “Hi, I’m Mr. Pettigrew. Thanks for having us.”

I said, “I hear you're a dentist?” Lola said, “You say hello first.” “Hi. I hear you're a dentist?” Charlie said, “Yes, I'm a dentist.” I said, “What percentage of dentists do you think are having affairs with their hygienists?” Charlie started laughing. Lola said, “Charlie, stay in character.” Charlie straightened up. “I’m offended.” Lola said, “Good. That’s probably accurate.”

We started again. Charlie came back wearing sunglasses. “My wife and I just got back from vacation.” I said, “Together?” Charlie broke immediately. Lola said, “Why would you ask that?” “I’m trying to understand the marriage.” “You do not need to understand the marriage.” Charlie said, “I think he does.” “Charlie.”

By the third rehearsal, Charlie had invented a husband, eight children, a drinking problem, and a second family in Arkansas. Lola threw down her notes. “This is pointless.” I said, “I think I’m getting better.” Charlie said, “I think we should have people over again.”
