"A Face Worth Fighting For"

I helped pay for a DNA test to prove the man in this painting was innocent of murder.

Thirty-six years in prison. Every appeal denied. His wife had spent most of her adult life fighting to get him out. We organized a charity dinner to raise money for his legal defense and other potentially innocent people who'd been failed by the system.

Then the DNA results came back. He'd done it. He had murdered that girl years ago.

His wife wanted to cancel the event. I said that wasn't fair to the vendors we hired. It's not like they had murdered anyone.

The event was sold out. We had a live auction, a band, and a local news anchor who'd agreed to emcee at a reduced rate. The ballroom was paid for. A local Kia dealership had sponsored the event and wrapped a Sorento with the man's face and the words "DRIVEN BY JUSTICE". They'd also printed eight hundred cocktail napkins with a picture of a man who, as it turned out, had committed murder.

We had an emergency committee meeting. Someone suggested finding another innocent prisoner. But there wasn't enough time to properly vet one.

We instead decided to make the evening about women's empowerment. His wife had devoted decades to a man who'd been lying to her. If that wasn't a story of female resilience, I don't know what is.

We sent an email to the guests explaining the DNA results and announcing the new cause. We changed "A Night for Justice" to "An Evening of Hope." This gave us the flexibility we needed.

Nobody seemed particularly concerned. One couple asked if their table would still be near the mayor. Another wanted to know whether there would still be an open bar. We assured them the evening would be exactly the same, apart from what it was about.

The painting was already half finished when I got the DNA results. I changed the title of the painting and put it in the auction as is and called it "The Truth Shall Prevail"

At the charity event his wife gave a speech and announced she was leaving him. The room erupted in applause. After the speech the emcee announced that we were witnessing an extraordinary moment of female empowerment. There was another standing ovation.

In the end, we did manage to free someone. Just not the person we'd planned on.
