At the funeral it was already there, placed directly in front of the coffin. Much bigger than expected and shockingly vibrant. The healthiest thing in the room she thought. 

The bright pink tag was still on it.

Her stomach sank.

The tag kept twisting slowly, catching the air from the vents, tapping the "plant" with a soft plastic click. Not loud enough to address but loud enough to notice.

She thought about pulling it off, but there was no version of that where she didn’t end up crouched in front of the coffin, trying to unloop the tag while people watched. That felt worse. 

The card was visible too.

So there was no mystery. Just public credit. 

Someone behind her whispered, “Who brings a fake plant to a funeral,” and she felt her body sweat in a way grief usually doesn’t cause. 

Afterward, the family gathered up the flowers they wanted. Bouquets disappeared. Arrangements were carried out carefully. The fake one was (the only one) left behind. 

She noticed it sitting there alone. Tag still tapping.     

She waited to see if someone would claim it.

No one did, so she carried it out past the family, whose flowers (among other things) were dying, and took it home.

Six months later it still looks great.
